Visiting the Henequen Haciendas: A Journey Through Time

The henequen haciendas are a vast network of magnificent estates built with the wealth gotten from Yucatan’s famous “green gold”, the henequen. These buildings symbolized Yucatan’s brief period of affluence but were later abandoned in the 1950s after a major economic decline.

Although the once glorious buildings are now covered in ruins, the history behind them makes this part of Yucatan deserving of a tour.

To understand the allure of the henequen haciendas, you must first immerse yourself in the history that has shaped this land. And it all comes down to the hardy gray-green agave plant, henequen.

The History of the Henequen Haciendas

Native to the Yucatan Peninsula, henequen is an agave plant with sturdy, resistant fibers that are processed into sisal, a material used for making ropes. In the 19th century due to the increased production of modern ships, agricultural machinery, and other monuments of industrialization, the global rope-making industry flourished. As a result, international markets made Yucatan their supplier of ropes, creating a lucrative opportunity for henequen growers in Yucatan, who wasted no time in dubbing this plant Oro Verde (green gold).

With the wealth obtained from henequen sales, Yucatan was able to construct opulent buildings now known as the henequen haciendas. This all happened at the peak of the henequen cultivation boom, from 1880 to 1910. About 1,170 haciendas were built. A testament to the fortune the land enjoyed during that period.

The estate owners regarded the haciendas as their castles, to tell you how magnificent these now decaying buildings were. Some owners built their estates so large they were considered autonomous countries with their distinct currencies and laws.

But it’s the legend behind the henequen plant that makes the henequen haciendas even more fascinating.

The Legend of the Henequen Plant

According to Mayan legend, the henequen was discovered by the god Zamná in a rather interesting way. As a healer, he always explored the fields in search of herbs. He pricked his hand on a plant with rigid, spear-like leaves one fateful day. Furious that their god was hurt by a plant, one of the followers of Zamná relentlessly struck the plant to destroy it. Surprisingly, the leaves although crushed displayed a web of extremely tough fibers that survived the attack. It was at this point Zamná realized he had stumbled upon a gem, the henequen. He instructed his followers to grow more of the plant henceforth. Today, henequen has over 50 industrial and health uses.

Yucatan, having become the richest state in Mexico thanks to the green gold, flourished with the newfound fortune until the end of WWI and the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. The rope market collapsed, the people fell into poverty, and the hacienda owners left the buildings to erode.
